The bulgarian folklore

BY TEODORA SVILENSKA

INTRO

Bulgaria is a beautiful country, rich in culture and nature, but very few people know a lot about it. This is why I decided to create this website which presents a part of Bulgarian folklore, more precisely, the different traditional folk costumes according to ethnographic regions and the differences in dance. With this site, I hope to introduce you to an interesting aspect of a foreign culture and encourage your curiosity about other cultures. Since dance is a very important part of Bulgarian folklore, I filmed some dances with my dance group "Horo na Megdana" which I put on this site.

To Begin

Where is Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is located in Europe. More precisely, in Eastern Europe. Its neighbors are Romania, Serbia, Greece, Turkey and Macedonia. In addition, Bulgaria has a coast on the Black Sea.

Folklore and Dance

Hisory

In the past, dancing was an essential part of any party. The whole village participated and danced at the big festivals. The dance had a resembling force and everyone loved it. At the time, people followed specific rules and traditions. First in line were the young unmarried women. Next came the young men who danced separately from the women. Then came the married women and finally came the married men. When everyone was gathered in the center of the village, communal dances began and the first to dance was the most authoritative man in the village.

Opinion

Bulgarian folk dance is an exciting experience for both those who dance and those who watch. It is an art filled with wealth, culture and emotions practiced for centuries. Bulgarian dances are extremely diverse in terms of rhythm, dynamics and movements. Some dances are filled with energy and jumps, others are slower and their movements are wider. Some dances are even practiced all over the country.

I find that dance and culture must absolutely be preserved, especially in today's world, becoming more and more modern. We tend to ignore the traces left by previous generations. We focus on the future and progress without considering that we are destroying a memory.

Folklore is the reason for the survival of a nation. It is a bond that unites all individuals together and transmits history and values to future generations. This is why I find it necessary to preserve it and I developed this site.

THE DIFFERENT ETHNOGRAPHIC REGIONS

Me and the PP
My inspirations and experience

I am a Secondary V student (last year high school) and this site is my personal project (PP) which is essential in order to obtain an international diploma. I chose this topic in particular because I am very proud of my origins and I am part of a Bulgarian folk dance group. I have always been fascinated by different cultures and this project is the perfect opportunity to transmit my way of thinking and my values to other students. To know more about me, my dance group or the purpose of this project please click on the button.
