Добруджанска Област
Dobrudja Region
Continue
The region of Dobrudja, or in Bulgarian "Dobrudjanska oblast", is located at the north-eastern end of Bulgaria (number 1 on the image). It is bounded on the left by the Dunav river and on the right by the Black Sea. This region is called the "wheat field" of Bulgaria because its main activity is cereal farming.
Dance
In this region, dance is strongly linked to agriculture and nature. People often dance leaning or slightly squatting towards the ground. This posture evokes the working posture in the fields and symbolizes proximity to the ground and nature. The people living in this territory are said to be very hardworking and calm. In dance, many of the movements danced by men imitate agricultural activities and are directed downward. Women's movements are more delicate and graceful. They use their hands a lot and the movements symbolize the calm flow of the river, the fields of wheat dancing in the wind or the act of making bread. In addition, wooden spoons are a widely used accessory.
The famous dances of this region are: sborenka, opas and varnenski tants.
Traditional Clothes
For Women
The costume of this region is composed of an embroidered red coat (sukman), a long white cotton shirt and a black woolen apron richly embroidered with natural patterns. In addition, it is common to wear a yellow cloth on the head.
For Men
This costume is quite simple. It consists of a white embroidered cotton shirt, black pants, a red jacket open at the front and a red woolen checkered belt. We can have "kalcuni" on the legs (see photo) and for shoes "opinci" which are traditional shoes made of leather.
