Северняшка Област

Northern Region

Continue

"Severniashka oblast" translated from Bulgarian means region of the north. As its name suggests, it is located at the north-western end of Bulgaria (number 4 in the image). It is bounded by the Dunav River, by the Grand Balkan (mountain range) and by the borders with Romania and Serbia. Because of these borders, folklore in this region is influenced by Romanian and Serbian folklore. Finally, this region is the second largest ethnographic region in Bulgaria.

Danse

Dance

The dances from this region are very popular in Bulgaria because their movements are simple, but very fun to execute. These are dances filled with energy and joy, which makes them pleasant to watch and makes people want to join. It is for this reason that they are commonly danced at gatherings and parties. The dance movements can be characterized as broad and emphasizing the legs. There is a lot of jumps and dynamism. People hold hands, but when dancing, they move them freely back and forth to accompany the dance. This gives an impression of freedom, joy and lightness to the dance.

The popular dances (horos) originating from this region are:

  • elenino horo

  • chichovo horo

  • daichovo horo

  • arkanul

  • dunavsko horo

Traditional Clothes

Women

The traditional costume of this region is of the "dvuprestilchen" type, that is to say having two embroidered aprons, one in front and one in back. It consists of a long white cotton shirt which is embroidered with lace and patterns, a pleated rear apron (which actually goes all around) called "bruchnik" and a longer apron in front called "futa".

Depending on the most specific location in the region, the length of the rear apron may vary. The further we move east, the more the length increases. In addition, in the east, the dominant colors are darker, unlike in the west where the colors are brighter. Despite everything, red is the most used color.

Men

Until the middle of the 18th century, the color white was dominant in male costumes from the north. In the 19th century, the darker costume gained popularity, but the one before was kept and considered traditional.

It traditionally consists of tight white pants called "benevrek", a very decorated white shirt, a wide red belt and a short jacket up to the waist and which was also very decorated with embroidery. We called the jacket "djamadan".
